With advances in research coupled with surmounting cost of clinical trials and long timelines for traditional drug development, collaborative clinical development has become an avenue to bring novel agents to the market. Novel ways to collaborate on drug development are either already under way or being actively considered in many therapeutic areas, even among competitors. This panel will discuss the advancements made in innovative clinical development (including innovative clinical trial designs, open sourcing initiatives by Big Pharma, policy changes to improve clinical trial designs and sustainability of new therapies in the payer market), challenges encountered and areas of further improvement.

In the United States rare diseases are defined as those that affect fewer than 200,000 people. The panel will involve a lively discussion of how companies and researchers can engage and bring forward cures for these diseases and the role philanthropy and profits play in creating incentives and imposing barriers to bring needed products to these populations.
