Dr. Alka Kanaya, Principal Investigator of the MASALA (Mediators of Atherosclerosis in South Asians Living in America) study, will present an overview of the study and its key findings. The primary objectives for this talk include:
1. To describe the methods and goals of the newly created MASALA study and its partnership with the MESA study to efficiently make cross-ethnic comparisons with four other race/ethnic groups.
2. To recognize that South Asians have high rates of diabetes, hypertension and atherosclerosis despite modest weight and high socioeconomic attainment.
3. To understand lifestyle, cultural and genetic factors that are driving these higher rates of disease.
